CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE

AFTER OUR SECRET BREAKFAST, I FORCE NOAH TO show me all his other hiding spots, determined to find one that could work for a new garden. Of course, I can’t tell him that.

“I don’t know why we’re bothering, M,” he grumbles. “I already showed you my best spot. Speaking of, let’s go hang at the cove.”

“It’s good to have options,” I say, peering into a bathroom. Inside, it’s dark, but not pitch-black. There must be a window letting in natural light. And obviously it has access to water. “Why don’t you hang out here again? Seems totally deserted. And you don’t have to worry about bad weather, like at the cove.”

“Think about why a bathroom might be out of service.”

I frown as I step inside. That’s when the smell hits me. “Oh,” I say, pulling my sweatshirt up over my nose. “Never mind.”

“Told you,” he mutters, hurrying past. “When I first found it, the stench wasn’t so bad. But it’s gotten worse, and now…”

“It smells like a solar-powered sewage plant?”

“Exactly. Now, can we please go to the cove?”

“Oh, fine.” None of the other options were interstellar, but there were a few I could maybe circle back to later. I adjust the hem of my sweatshirt, discreetly nudging the seeds in my pocket. I’ll find a home for you soon. I promise.

Noah and I emerge into the sunlight. At the cove, he stretches out on the ground as usual, folding his hands behind his head, while I sink down to lean against the railing. The water’s darker than usual, churning a navy so deep it’s almost black. I reach through a gap in the bars and wet my fingertips.

“Storm’s brewing,” Noah comments, watching me.

I look up. There’s not a single cloud in the pale orange sky. “How can you tell?”

“You can always see a storm in the sea before the sky. It’s like the water knows what’s coming.”

As if the weather heard him, a breeze picks up, whipping strands into my face. “Should we go?” I ask, trying to tuck my hair behind my ear. I don’t really want to leave. I’ve never seen a storm in person before. But the water below my feet is looking angrier and angrier.

Noah shrugs. “It might pass us by. We’ll know when it’s time to leave. If you don’t want to get soaked, though, we should head inside now.”

I gape at him. “You mean it’s going to rain?”

“Why?” he asks with a smirk. “Are you going to melt?”

“Even if I were, I wouldn’t leave. I’ve never seen rain before.”

He laughs. “It’s not that interstellar. It’s just water. We’ve got tons of it here.”

“Not falling from the sky!” I tilt my head up to watch the storm roll in.

The wind’s blowing stronger now, and crimson clouds sweep quickly across the sky. I’m not going to miss my first rainstorm. I’m determined to wait it out. That is until the ground starts rocking like a seesaw.

“Uh, is the building supposed to be moving?” I ask, pulling myself to my feet.
